Migrating from Progress to Oracle

Capgemini, Oracle and Cornerstone Technology have joined forces to create a migration programme for ISVs with applications developed on Progress Software's database technologies.

The 'Progress to Oracle' migration service enables ISVs to cost effectively, and predictably, move their applications to Oracle 10g. As a result, applications can be maintained more easily at lower cost, and can be extended using the latest innovations in database architecture from the market leader. In many cases, Oracle migration is a commercial imperative as customers are increasingly asking for applications built on Oracle. The migration covers all layers of the application, including the database and data, business logic, navigation and interfaces.

Most of the migration (as much as 90%) is performed automatically using tools created by Cornerstone Technology. The migration project begins with a proof of concept, where the application is analysed and conversion rules are created. A module of the ISV's application is migrated as a demonstration and used to refine the plan for the full migration. Capgemini manages the migration project (typically 3-6 months, depending on the application's complexity) to ensure it goes smoothly and delivers benefits that exceed expectations.

The migrated application is structured in Oracle's Java architecture, Application Development Framework (ADF), and maintainable with JDeveloper. The ADF increases productivity, especially where the ISV is using JDeveloper in combination with JHeadstart as the development tool.
